Justifications for his north-up approach vary and by the middle ages East was often placed at top. The word Orient expands to the term \u201cto orientate\u201d which derives from \u201cto locate or position so as to face the east\u201d. During the age of exploration, European cartographers once again followed the north-up convention, perhaps because the North Star was their fixed reference point for navigation, or because they wanted to ensure Europe\u2019s claim at the top of the world.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thiswayupafrica.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/bigblue.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-323 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thiswayupafrica.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/bigblue-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"bigblue\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thiswayupafrica.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/bigblue-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thiswayupafrica.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/bigblue-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thiswayupafrica.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/bigblue.jpg 599w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The famous \u201c<a title=\"Blue Marble\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Blue_Marble\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Marble<\/a>&#8221; \u00a0photograph of the Earth taken from on board Apollo 17 was originally oriented with the south pole at the top, with the continent of Africa just below. NASA turned the image upside-down to fit the American world view.<\/p>\n<p>From the corrected view South America and Africa are more prominent, and the Middle East completely dwarfs Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Also consider:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The Crade of Humankind situated in Southern Africa is where we began. (The site has produced a large number, as well as some of the oldest, hominin fossils ever found.)<\/li>\n<li>The Chinese were the first to invent the compass, which they always thought of as pointing south. South was a sacred direction, in ceremony the king would always face south.<\/li>\n<li>In the Southern Hemisphere a waxing (inCreasing) moon forms the letter C. As it wanes (Decreasing) it forms the letter D. This is incorrect in the Northern Hemisphere.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Who says North is up?
